The Kunsthaus Leer - Archive for Art from East Friesland is an art house in the East Frisian district town of Leer . It opened on March 10, 2012. It is sponsored by the district of Leer and supported by the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse LeerWittmund .

history

The initiative for the establishment of the Kunsthaus Leer goes back to Bernhard Bramlage, District Administrator of the district of Leer from 2001 to 2016. The basis of the collection was laid by the former honorary scientific director Heiko Jörn. In March 2012 he handed over the management to the art historian Susanne Augat. The Kunsthaus opened in the same month. It is based in a late 1950s white bungalow near the city center, which is surrounded by a garden. Since then the house has shown various exhibitions.

Conception and mediation

The former director of the Hessen Kassel Museum Landscape ( Wilhelmshöhe Palace ), Bernd Küster , developed the concept of the Kunsthaus. The aim of the institution is to “acquire works and estates from artists from East Friesland with the support of the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung LeerWittmund and to keep them in representative collections”. In addition, the Kunsthaus strives for close cooperation with the museums, cultural institutions and associations in the region and would like to grant schools and youth institutions access to its program. In the long term, Leer should become a well-networked center of art in East Frisia and thus guarantee the preservation of culture in the region. In addition, the Kunsthaus would like to document the development of art in East Friesland (...) by "preserving a representative selection of works from the bequests or the work of artists who are still working."

The Kunsthaus Leer takes over bequests, bequests and other art collections. The house's holdings are photographed, inventoried and digitized to enable research and publications. The individual works can be borrowed for exhibitions, but cannot be purchased as archive holdings.

The Kunsthaus Leer shows around three exhibitions a year, which deal with the themes of East Frisian art from the last hundred years and mostly deal with the work of individual artists. According to the collection, the focus is on current East Frisian art. A catalog is usually published for the exhibitions.
