Gerd Rokahr

Gerd Rokahr (born August 17, 1942 in Hanover ) is a German painter , graphic artist and author .

Live and act

Gerd Rokahr spent his childhood and youth in Esens , East Friesland . After an apprenticeship as a shop window designer, he studied painting and graphics at the Bremen State Art School with Winfred Gaul and Karl Heinrich Greune . In 1967 he received support studies at the State Art School in Bremen as well as an "artist support" from the Senator for Education in Bremen. From 1971 to 2001 he worked as an art teacher in Esens and from 1975 to 1978 as a lecturer in painting and graphics at the Wittmund District Adult Education Center. Rokahr has been a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK Ostfriesland) since 1976 .

The focus of Gerd Rokahr's artistic work is the human being with his or her peculiarities. “The graphic artist translates human weaknesses and behaviors into impressive images with sometimes subtle humor and an unconventional language of forms reminiscent of childlike expression. Dreams, the unconscious and the mysterious are also designed by him in an imaginative way. His landscapes, on the other hand, show the peculiarities of the North Sea coast, while the political works address current social conflicts. The overall work, which plays with visual perception, is characterized by its multi-senses ”.

As an author, Gerd Rokahr has dealt in particular with the history of the city of Esens. In recognition of his commitment, the city council awarded him the "Silver Bear" of the city of Esens in 1992. Gerd Rokahr's book "Die Juden in Esens", which appeared in 1987 as the first monograph of the working group "History of the Jewish Communities in East Friesland" in the East Frisian Landscape in Aurich, was considered a model for all subsequent monographs of the working group after its publication. His book Eine Chronik der Stadt Esens is considered to be the first scientifically based and comprehensive chronicle of an East Frisian city.

In 1987 the "Ecumenical Working Group Jews and Christians in Esens" was founded, which Rokahr headed as 1st chairman until 1996. In 1990, during a “Week of Encounters” between Jews and Christians from Harlingerland in Esens, the “August-Gottschalk-Haus” was inaugurated as a memorial and museum dedicated to the history of Jews in East Frisia.

Gerd Rokahr lives and works as a graphic artist and author of regional history studies in Esens, East Frisia.

Gerd Rokahr was included with his work in the " artist database and estate archive of Lower Saxony ".
