history

Title page of the first edition of the Ostfriesischer Kurier (July 2, 1867)
Former publishing house of the Soltauschen printing house on Norderney

The company's founder, Diedrich Gerhard Soltau (born November 30, 1836 - March 17, 1894) received a business license from the city of Norden on January 21, 1861. A few years later, Soltau received the concession to publish a newspaper in return for a deposit of 2000 gold thalers. On July 2, 1867, the first East Frisian Courier appeared . In 1868 Soltau founded the bathing newspaper there on the island of Norderney, opposite the city to the north .

In 1922, the founder's sons divided the company into Otto G. Soltau ( Norderneyer Badezeitung ) and Heinrich Soltau ( Ostfriesischer Courier ).

After much turmoil in the war and the Nazis' co-ordination with the press, the Ostfriesischer Kurier did not appear in the years 1945 to 1949, but only again afterwards, after freedom of the press had been established in autumn 1949.

Dietrich Gerhard Soltau died in 1953 after a long illness. Thereupon his wife Irmgard, née Lattmann, from Goslar, took over the responsibility for the publishing house with 64 employees at the time. After her death in 1973, the management of the company went to her eldest daughter Ursula Basse-Soltau (1928–2017) and the publishing director Heinrich Siever. He left the Ostfriesischer Kurier in 1976 and became managing director of the Ostfriesen-Zeitung in Leer.

The termination of the Emder Zeitung's wage printing plunged the company into an existential crisis between 1979 and 1981. After the newspaper printing plant there was destroyed in the course of the bombing of Emden in 1945, Norder Verlag had completely focused on newspaper production. Around a third of the 100 Norder employees worked on the Emden contract in 1979. In June 1981 the last Emder newspaper was printed in Norden.

In 1981 Christian Basse (1954–2018) joined the company's management as a member of the fifth generation. In December of that year, the publishing house sold its properties in the city center and built a modern printing and publishing house in the Leegemoor industrial park in the south of the city. Since then, supra-regional marketing has been taking place under the Soltau-Kurier-Norden logo and under the new name of SKN Druck und Verlag GmbH & Co.

Ostfriesische Pressedruck GmbH was founded in 1985 with the participation of SKN in Emden. In addition to the Ostfriesischer Kurier, the Emder Zeitung was printed there again.

In 1998, SKN left the Ostfriesen-Zeitung in Leer as a partner. The remaining OZ shareholders decided in principle against newspaper printing in East Friesland and outsourced the printing of the newspapers to Oldenburg.

In the years 1999 to 2001 the print shop of Ostfriesische Pressedruck GmbH in Emden was expanded with a volume of 25 million DM. In May 2001 an issue of the Ostfriesischer Kurier appeared for the first time consistently in the 4c Euroscale.

In 2005, SKN took over the shares in the company Dunkmann from Aurich in Ostfriesische Pressedruck GmbH. The publishing and title rights to Norderneyer Badezeitung were bought back in 2011 by SKN Druck und Verlag in Norden.

After Christian Basse's death, the management is in the hands of his daughters Charlotte Basse and Victoria Basse, who have been members of the management since 2004 and 2007, respectively.
