The Leer Heimatmuseum deals with living and working in Leer and the history of the city.

history

Heimatmuseum Leer, Neue Straße 14 and 12 (from left)

The starting point for the museum's collection was the founding of the antiquity association in 1889, which began collecting “antiquities”. In 1912 this was united with the "Association for Homeland Security and Local History" - in the same year the first museum opened in Haneburg , which was officially founded two years later. At first it consisted of only four rooms, later the entire castle complex, which was acquired in 1919. In 1934 the association was forced to return the Haneburg castle to the city, and the National Socialists established a "farmer's school" there. The current museum buildings at Neue Strasse 12 and 14 were bought with the proceeds, two former packing and trading houses from the 18th century in the style of Dutch classicism . Both in terms of content and space, the National Socialist ideology found space in the exhibition rooms - so that after the end of the war, the museum could be viewed by the Canadian troops as a representative of National Socialism and the museum pieces were destroyed and looted.

After the reconstruction, in which the natural scientist and student Fritz Klimmek participated, the local history museum was reopened in 1947. In the 1950s and 1970s, the departments were constantly expanded and supplemented, while at the same time the endeavor grew to find new, more professional ways of mediation. Important milestones in recent history were the public protest against the renovation of the old town and the professionalization of museum work.

In 2012 the Heimatmuseum Leer celebrated its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the museum organized a five-day museum marathon from September 6th to 9th - 100 hours of non-stop program.

In 2018 the museum was awarded the museum seal of approval from the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen eV.
