Abudefduf is a genus of damselfish (Pomacentridae). Their name comes from Arabic, while in English they are referred to as "Sergeant major" (something like Oberstabsfeldwebel )because of the many stripes. Abudefduf species live as plankton hunters , spawners and scrap users in coral and rock reefs in tropical and subtropical areas of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific .
The high-backed animals are among the larger representatives of the damselfish with lengths of 13 to 30 centimeters. They usually have a silvery, bluish, white or light gray basic color with dark, vertical stripes of different thicknesses and different numbers.
Systematics
According to a phylogenetic study, the genus is one of the four main clades of damselfish. The Caribbean and East Pacific species are compared to the other species as a sister group . The West Indo-Pacific species are assigned to two clearly distinguishable, unnamed clades.
