Felix Bobertag was the son of pastor Karl Bobertag. After taking private lessons from his father, he attended high school in Liegnitz from 1855 to 1860 . From 1860 to 1864 he studied Protestant theology, philosophy, and classical and modern philology at the University of Breslau . Here he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.
In 1865 he passed both the First Theological Examination and the First Examen pro facultate docendi for the higher teaching post. In 1865 he got a job as a candidate and in 1866 a permanent position as a teacher at the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium (Breslau) , from 1873 until his death he was a senior teacher here.
In 1874 he completed his habilitation in German studies at the University of Breslau and became a private lecturer for New High German language and literature. After many years of efforts by the faculty, he was awarded the title of professor in 1893.
Bobertag's research focus was on the folk books of the 16th and 17th centuries. As part of the German National Literature series , he edited numerous volumes. His edition of the Simplicissimus saw several editions and reprints. His magnum opus History of the novel and its related poetry genres in Germany , however, remained a fragment.
Since 1867 he was married to the writer Bianca Bobertag (1846–1900), b. Marbach, the daughter of his colleague Christian August Hermann Marbach at the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium.
