history

"Fascination Gut" model

In 2001 Felix Burda died of colon cancer at the age of 33.

The grave of Felix Burda in the Bogenhausener Friedhof in Munich.

On this occasion, his parents Christa Maar and Hubert Burda are now committed to better provision in this area. Had the disease been recognized earlier, her son could have been cured. Maar and Burda founded the Felix Burda Foundation to raise awareness among the population of the risk of colon cancer. Her goal was to halve the colon cancer rate within five years. Leading medical professionals supported the foundation in their efforts, and Wim Wenders shot the first television commercial on the subject in 2001. In 2002 the foundation initiated the so-called colon cancer month of March for the first time in order to anchor its concern in the media. As part of the annual advertising campaign , ads will be placed in various media this month.

Due to the commitment of the foundation, the statutory health insurance in 2002 included colonoscopy for insured persons aged 55 and over with one repetition after ten years in its catalog of benefits. Regardless of the dangers of colon cancer, the response to offers for early diagnosis of the disease was initially low. In order to increase acceptance, the foundation aimed in particular at increasing the awareness of general practitioners. In addition, the Felix Burda Award was presented for the first time in 2003: the award has since honored people who have made outstanding contributions to the screening and early detection of colon cancer through innovative campaigns, projects or scientific work. The first winners included Kai Diekmann , Günther Jauch and Susan Stahnke .

Within a year of the first month of colon cancer in March, the number of colonoscopies increased by 34%, which the Felix Burda Foundation rated as a success of its work. In order to further expand acceptance, the statutory health insurance companies were asked, for example, to offer bonus models in order to make participation more attractive for the insured. While the colonoscopy has developed into the most important element of cancer prevention in Germany, doctors in other countries viewed the “mass test” critically. Critics complained that the stress for cardiovascular patients and other side effects of colonoscopy are insufficiently documented. Nevertheless, the foundation expanded its efforts in the fight against colon cancer with the aim of keeping the detection rate of colon cancer permanently high.

In the years that followed, the Felix Burda Foundation won Franz Beckenbauer , Maria Furtwängler , Verona Pooth and Harald Schmidt as prominent ambassadors for their cause. She devoted herself to preventive care for men, as they statistically have a higher risk of developing colon cancer. She also campaigned for pharmacists to provide information about colon cancer from now on. In 2008 the foundation presented a walk-in model of a large intestine that explains the anatomy and function of the organ. With a length of around 20 meters and a height of 2.80 meters, it was the largest replica of its kind in Europe. The model can be rented and has toured several cities with the since then. For example, it was set up in busy public places such as Frankfurt Central Station . The actions are mostly accompanied by medical specialists who answered questions from visitors. In addition, the foundation intensified its cooperation with companies in the fight against colon cancer.

The commitment of the Felix Burda Foundation was particularly highlighted when the special prize of the German Prize for Business Communication 2009 was awarded. Other awards followed. In addition to the use for colorectal cancer prevention, also with the risk factors for colorectal cancer, for example the family risk or diabetes . In 2011, in cooperation with the Assmann Foundation for Prevention, she launched a mobile app that provides information about the legal measures to prevent various diseases. The foundation participated in the National Cancer Plan and the draft for the “further development of colorectal cancer screening”. The most important recommendations from this draft were taken into account in the Cancer Early Detection and Register Act (KFRG) of 2013. It was in favor of the introduction of immunological stool tests, which were finally included in the list of benefits of the statutory health insurance in 2017. They can be used to detect the smallest traces of blood in the stool, which is a recognized indicator of colon cancer, much more precisely than with the stool test that has been used since the 1970s.

Most recently, the Felix Burda Foundation declared the better organization of colorectal cancer screenings and the separate consideration of people with familial colorectal cancer risk as its tasks.

organization

The Felix Burda Foundation is an independent but not legally capable foundation that is managed in trust by the Hubert Burda Foundation . The seat is in Offenburg, the office is in Munich. The purpose of the foundation is to promote public health as well as teaching, science and research in the field of the development, prevention, detection and control of cancer, in particular colon cancer. The foundation directly pursues charitable purposes in the tax code . It achieves its goals through various forms of public relations work, for example through the organization of congresses and conferences or the publication of teaching and training materials. The statutes expressly provide for the foundation to be integrated into international networks in order to promote the exchange of experts in their field. In the first few years, colorectal cancer screening in particular played an important role in the United States, which had a higher participation rate and a lower mortality rate than Germany.

The capital of the Felix Burda Foundation amounts to 300,000 euros. According to the statutes, its highest body is a voluntary board of trustees of three to five people. Christa Maar and Hubert Burda are members for life, other curators are appointed for terms of three, four or five years. In addition to Maar and Burda, the committee currently includes the two internists and gastroenterologists Berndt Birkner and Meinhard Classen .
