Christa Maar (* 8. April 1939 as Christa Weber ) is a German art historian . In 2001, she and Hubert Burda founded the Felix Burda Foundation , which is dedicated to the prevention and early detection of colon cancer . Maar is the managing director and also a member of the board of trustees .

Life

Christa Maar attended grammar school and, from secondary school, a business school . She then studied art history and received her doctorate in 1970 on the trompe-l'œil in Dutch painting of the 17th century. She then worked as a screenwriter and director of television films . In 1988 Maar took over the editor-in-chief of " Pan ", the art magazine with the highest circulation in Europe. She held the position until the merger of “Pan” with “Ambiente” in 1992. In 1994 Maar became director of the Burda Academy for the Third Millennium, an interdisciplinary think tank of the Hubert Burda Foundation. This dealt, for example, with the effects of the Internet on politics.

From 1967 to 1972 Christa Maar was married to the publisher Hubert Burda . The couple's son, Felix Burda, died of colon cancer in 2001 at the age of 33. At his request, Maar has since been committed to sensitizing people to the importance of preventive care. The Felix Burda Foundation, founded in 2001 with Hubert Burda, moved into the center of its activities . Maar became the managing director. Since then, the foundation has drawn the general public's attention to the topic of colon cancer prevention. Among other things, she initiated the colon cancer month of March and achieved the introduction of statutory screening colonoscopy . Maar also founded the Colon Cancer Network, of which she is president, in 2004 with doctors and scientists.

The Tagesspiegel later ruled that the untimely death of her son had made Maar a “political champion for the early detection of colon cancer”. In 2005 she received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her services to the common good . In 2009 he was awarded the Bavarian State Medal for Services to Health and in 2011 the Bavarian Order of Merit . Most recently Maar was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the German Cancer Research Center for three years in 2015 .
