Life

Felix Meyer was born on February 1, 1653 in Wülflingen as the twelfth son of Pastor Hans Heinrich and Elsbeth Meyer (née Troll). In 1675 he married Sarah Bidermann.

Meyer received his first painting lessons in Winterthur in 1666/67. He then traveled to Nuremberg , where from 1668 to 1673 he studied with the portraitist Melchior Balthasar Krieger and the landscape painter Johann Franz Ermels . He had acquaintances with Willem van Bemmel , Johann Oswald Harms , Johann Heinrich Roos and Johann Melchior Roos . In Nuremberg he was given knowledge of Dutch painting, which became formative for his later painting. In 1673 he traveled to Italy , but had to break off the trip in Milan due to illness. From 1678 to 1681 he was the teacher of Jakob Sulzer in Winterthur . In 1696 he made another trip to Nuremberg, where he met Georg Philipp Rugendas . From 1699 to 1703 he lived in Bern , like many Winterthur painters after him. Many of his famous landscapes of the Swiss mountains were created there during study trips to the mountains. In 1707, together with his son Hans Heinrich, he was able to paint two rooms in the St. Florian monastery near Linz , probably his most important commission.

In 1688 Meyer was a Rottenmeister in the Winterthur officer corps. Politically, he was active in the Winterthur Grand Council from 1697. He spent his twilight years as a Winterthur magistrate at Wyden Castle near Ossingen, where he died on June 11, 1713. His estate is now in the special collections of the Winterthur libraries . His sons were of no importance as painters.
