Felix Oldenburg

Felix Oldenburg (born June 22, 1976 ) is a German association manager, social entrepreneur and publicist. He is chairman of the European foundation network Dafne.

Positions

With numerous contributions, Oldenburg participates in the discourse on the present and future of philanthropy , foundations and the non-profit sector in Germany and Europe.

Against the background of the low interest rate phase, changed behavioral patterns in the charity sector and political challenges, he sees a need for action in the areas of foundation law, asset management and participation. "With a modern interpretation and regulation, foundations not only fit into our past and present, but can also be surprising solutions for the future."

In 2019 he pointed out a so-called "foundation gap". While the sum of top assets has been increasing in Germany for two decades, the sum of foundation assets has lagged far behind the development. As a result, up to 20 billion euros were lost to the common good. Oldenburg links the analysis with three suggestions for improving the situation.

In the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , he explained that people turn to philanthropy earlier and earlier and called this the "Zuckerberg effect" in reference to the founder of Facebook .

Oldenburg is critical of the increasing restrictions on the freedom of civil society organizations in Europe (including Hungary, Turkey, Poland) and calls for greater political commitment to protect foundations and NGOs. He advocates greater harmonization of the legal framework for foundations in Europe and advocates a "Single Market for Philanthropy". He sees an increased mobilization of private capital for the common good as an opportunity for society and politics.

Career

Oldenburg studied philosophy, political science and musicology in Bonn, Tübingen and Oxford from 1994 to 2000 and policy and nonprofit management at Georgetown University from 2004 to 2005 .

In 2000 he moved to McKinsey & Company in London, where he was a strategy consultant for companies in Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain until 2002. From 2002 he built up the new governance business area at IFOK GmbH, primarily through citizen participation, and was co-initiator of the European Citizens' Conferences .

From 2009 to 2016 he headed the international Ashoka organization in Germany and Europe. In this role he established social entrepreneurship as a new field in Germany and built up a network of social founders and their supporters. In addition to several country programs, he also founded the financing agency for Social Entrepreneurship GmbH (FASE).

From 2016 to 2020 he was Secretary General of the Federal Association of German Foundations .

Oldenburg has been a Fellow at DIW since April 2020 and a member of the German UNICEF committee since June 2019 .
