Felix de Silva Avellar Brotero (born November 25, 1744 in Santo Antão do Tojal , † August 4, 1828 in Belém (Lisbon) ) was a Portuguese botanist . Its botanical author's abbreviation is “ bread. ".

Life

He made his first studies together with monks at what is now the Palácio Nacional de Mafra . In 1778 he left Portugal and went to France to study natural history . There he made the acquaintance of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon , Georges Cuvier and Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck . He studied medicine in Reims . During a stay in Paris he took the surname Brotero ("friend of the earth citizens"). In 1790 he went back to Portugal.

In 1791 he was appointed professor of botany and agriculture at the University of Coimbra . In 1818 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

He described around 1800 species of plants.

Awards

A memorial was erected for him in Coimbra and a secondary school (Escola Secundária De Avelar Brotero) was named after him. Brotera Cav was also named after him . a genus of the family of mallow (Malvaceae) and Broteroa DC. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
