The rock chapel of St. Ignatius ( Skalní kaple ) is a chapel in Všemily ( Schemmel ) in the Czech Republic , which was built entirely into a hollowed out boulder. It is one of the most remarkable sacred monuments in Bohemian Switzerland .

description

The unique chapel was carved entirely from a free-standing block of sandstone reminiscent of a loaf of bread . From the outside only a small cross and the two windows are visible. Inside, only the moisture penetrating from above reminds that the chapel was carved out of the bare rock.

Together with the surrounding half-timbered houses , the chapel forms a remarkable ensemble of folk architecture in Northern Bohemia. Immediately in front is the old Schemmel schoolhouse, which is noticeable due to its size and the small bell tower on the roof.

history

The chapel is mentioned for the first time in the directory of crosses and statues of the parish of Windisch Kamnitz in 1835:

A private chapel carved in the rock, inside the image of St. Ignatius. She stands on farmland. Her founder lives in Kaltenbach and no one from the community wants to take over the patronage of her, because she is made of stone, damp, and everything in her will soon be ruined.

Amazingly, the chapel has survived to our day. Even after the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War , there were people among the new residents of the place who saved the chapel from the threatening devastation and destruction. Today, the chapel is under the care of the municipal office Jetřichovice ( Dittersbach ), belongs to the Všemily today.
