The Felsenmeer is an extensive natural monument and geotope in the area of the Baden-Württemberg town of Murrhardt in the Rems-Murr district.
Characteristics
The natural monument was designated by ordinance of the Rems-Murr-Kreis district office of 23 August 1979 and has a size of 1.24 hectares.
Location and description
The Felsenmeer is located southeast of Murrhardt near the Riesberg Tower and extends over an approximately 60 meter high steep slope of the Rissberg directly below a rock face up to ten meters high made of Fleinsstein from the Lower Stubensandstein Formation. It ends at the bottom with a terrace-like leveling, which then merges into a flattening (with a pond) below another steep slope. The geomorphology of this area suggests an old landslide area with two clods that have slipped off like a staircase. The sandstone blocks, which are up to several cubic meters in size, come from the 100 meter wide demolition wall from Fleins above the cluster of blocks. A connection with a push-off running parallel to the slope immediately below is to be assumed.
The Felsenmeer is located in the natural area 101 - Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains within the main natural unit 10 - Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land . It is part of the protected landscape area No. 1.19.039 Murrhardter Wald . The Felsenmeer is also protected as a geotope under the name Felsenmeer on the slope of the Rißberg SE Murrhardt .
