Rock needle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A rock needle , also known as a rock tower or rock pinnacle , is a more or less free-standing, relatively slender, tower-like rock.

Examples are the summit of the Aiguille du Midi in the Montblanc massif, the almost 43 m high Barbarine on the south side of the Pfaffenstein near Königstein , the Bischofsmütze , the Drei Zinnen , the Vajolet towers in the Dolomites and the Fiamma in the Bergell .

The Latin word for rock pinnacle is scopulus (see Scuol ).
