Femi Osofisan

Babafemi Adeyemi Osofisan (born June 16, 1946 in Erunwon , Ogun ) is a Nigerian writer . He became internationally known primarily for his plays .

Life

Femi Osofisan attended Government College in Ibadan from 1959 to 1965 . He then studied French language and literature in Ibadan , Dakar and Paris . At the University of Ibadan , he founded a Marxist circle with Niyi Osundare and Kole Omotoso with the aim of renewing Nigerian literature . He demanded that the writers address the masses directly and therefore, after starting out in prose and poetry, chose the theater . His plays are among the most frequently performed in Nigeria today.

From 1973 and again since 2004, Osofisan has been Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Ibadan. In 1988 he became President of the Nigerian Writers' Association ANA . He received the ANA Poetry Prize for his collection of poems, Minted Coins .

He translated Aimé Césaire into English and Wole Soyinka into Yoruba and writes regularly as a journalist for newspapers and magazines.
