The "Post Tenebras Lux" window in Les Baux , a French commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , the rest of a building of the Renaissance period . It has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1905 .

history

The Latin saying post tenebras lux ("After the darkness, the light") above the window is a biblical motto adopted from Calvinism . The building probably served as a church for the strong Protestant community in Les Baux. The year 1571 is engraved next to the saying.

architecture

This stone cross window is the only remnant of a once magnificent building and an example of the early Renaissance in Provence . The window is surrounded by a sculpted decor inspired by antiquity . On the right and left are fluted pilasters with simply designed capitals . An architrave with a frieze forms the upper end .
