Feodor Szerbakow
Feodor Szerbakow (born February 20, 1911 in Eckertsdorf / East Prussia , as Theodor Szerbakowski ; † February 10, 2009 in Seebergen , Lilienthal municipality ) was a German painter .
Life
Szerbakow was born the son of a farmer in Masuria . Until he was 17, he helped his father with the farm. In 1928 he left his home and moved to Szczecin . He received his first basic knowledge of painting and drawing from a Pomeranian painter. In 1930 he attended the art college in Berlin. He studied painting here with Professors Buchholz, Lange and Hentschke. In Berlin he got to know works by Otto Modersohn from Fischerhude , the founder of the Worpswede artist colony , for the first time . In 1933 Szerbakow came to Worpswede with his wife Frieda to get closer to his painter idol. He became his role model and later his teacher. The area around the Teufelsmoor appealed to him, this is where he felt drawn. The artist was drawn to the moors and river landscapes, the silence and solitude of the area. During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. After that he gave up painting for a long time. He lived in seclusion in Seebergen, Lilienthal municipality. During this time he grew exotic flowers and ornamental plants and rhododendron bushes here. He became an accomplished botanist . It was not until the 1970s that he returned to painting.
plant
Szerbakow's painting style was decisively shaped by the Worpswede artist and impressionist Otto Modersohn . His landscape paintings often show fog-shrouded moors and sunsets, but also lush flower still lifes. Later he also orientated himself on the painting style of Anton Burger .
Honors
In 2001, on the occasion of Szerbakow's 90th birthday, the Worpswede artists' colony dedicates a large retrospective to its last living old master .
