Princess Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen

Princess Feodora Victoria Auguste Marie Marianne of Saxony-Meiningen (* May 12, 1879 in Potsdam ; † August 26, 1945 in the Hohenwiese sanatorium near Schmiedeberg ) was a princess of Saxony-Meiningen and, by marriage, Princess Reuss zu Köstritz .

Life

Grave of Heinrich XXX. and Feodora von Reuss zu Köstritz j. L.

Feodora was the only child of Duke Bernhard III. von Sachsen-Meiningen (1851–1928) from his marriage to Charlotte (1860–1919), daughter of the German Emperor Friedrich III. Feodora was Queen Victoria's first great-granddaughter . Her parents hardly took care of their only very difficult child, who also showed little interest in education. Charlotte described her daughter as "stupid" because she found it difficult to study. From some of Charlotte's letters to her mother, it appears that she was very concerned about Feodora's upbringing. She grew up primarily with her grandmother Empress Victoria in Friedrichshof .

She married Prince Heinrich XXX in Breslau on September 24, 1898 . Reuss zu Köstritz , Lord of Jänkendorf and Neuhof (1864–1939). He was the son of Prince Henry IX. Reuss zu Köstritz (1827–1898) and his wife Freiin Anna Marie Wilhelmine Helene von Zedlitz and Leipe (1829–1907). The marriage remained childless.

Feodora suffered, like her ancestor George III. and her mother, suffering from porphyria and spending much of her later life in sanatoriums. At the age of 66, the princess took her own life through carbon monoxide poisoning using a stove . She was buried with her husband in the crypt of Neuhof Castle (Radociny). The crypt was looted and destroyed after 1945. The mortal remains of the princess were examined for hereditary disease and, together with those of her husband, were reburied in the crypt in Hohenwiese (Wojków, OT von Kowary / Schmiedeberg) in 2004.
