Ferdinand Bender (theologian)

Ferdinand Bender (born August 9, 1816 in Darmstadt ; † May 27, 1902 , ibid) was a German Protestant theologian and court preacher .

Life

Bender studied theology in Giessen and Tübingen . From 1839 he worked at the court of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt , where he rose step by step from assistant preacher to first court preacher. In 1879 he was awarded the title of court preacher.

Bender published several writings, including a. Depictions of the history of the Waldensians as well as biographies of his special patron, Princess Elisabeth , and her daughter Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . He was involved in the Gustav Adolf Association and carried out numerous diaconal activities. In 1849 he was one of the founders of the Evangelical Association for External and Internal Mission and the women's association for the rescue of morally neglected girls . In 1858 he founded the Diakonissenhaus Elisabethenstift , in 1868 a "hostel for home" and in 1888 the Evangelical City Mission . Bender is considered the father of the Darmstadt revival .

He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Giessen in 1889 .
