Hinrich Otto Ferdinand Bimpage (born October 29, 1867 in Lüneburg , † October 9, 1956 in Leipzig ) was a German photographer. He worked in Halle an der Saale and Leipzig. Bimpage became famous for his architectural photographs.

Life

Little is known about the career and life of Ferdinand Bimpage. He was probably a son of the photographer Heinrich Bimpage , born in 1827, who had a photographic studio "Bimpage & Cie" with the address "Auf dem Meere 3" in Lüneburg. Heinrich Bimpage was awarded a bronze medal for the quality of his portraits at the “Third Photographic Exhibition” in Hamburg in 1868 and received a first prize there in 1871. Bimpage was a Freemason. He died in 1903.

Ferdinand Bimpage joined his father's photo business in 1887.

While around 1900 he still photographed genre pictures like the shepherd with his flock, which could be seen in the Photographische Rundschau , he later specialized in architectural photography . For example, he documented the construction of exhibition hall 20 based on plans by the architect Curt Schiemichen .

His pictures have appeared in newspapers and magazines; but he also brought out photo folders on certain topics. Around 1905, for example, he self-published a portfolio entitled Hallenser Bilderbogen and containing twelve images of the city.In 1912, together with Adolf Müller, he published the Great Horticultural Exhibition in Halle ad Saale in 1912 . Around 1925 Germany's memorial in the Elbe river basin came out, around the same time also The University of Halle and its picture decorations .

Ferdinand Bimpage's photographs were awarded prizes on the occasion of the 29th hiking meeting of the German Photographers Association in August 1900. At that time he was based in Halle. His studio was on the "Old Promenade". In the address book of 1904 he referred for the first time as “Photographer and Institute for Amateur Photography” in an advertisement to his “Specialty: Architecture and Landscape Photography”. Later he also offered photographic supplies. Entries can be found in Halle's address books until 1917. From 1917 there are entries in the Leipzig address book.

He sometimes referred to the back of photographs as “Ferd. Bimpage Industrie Photograph, Leipzig ”. A photo of the “Pfännerhof” is dated to 1928, which was apparently used as a canteen for the employees of the Friedrich Ernst mine in the north of Senftenberg . Bimpage also supplied the photo collection of the Leipzig trade fair office with pictures.

Over 800 photographs have been preserved that were taken between 1920 and 1937 on behalf of, or in the broadest sense of the word, for the " Leipziger Messe ". Another collection is in the Leipzig City History Museum .

Every now and then Bimpage photographs appear in auction shops, for example the interior of a room in a house in the Dessau-Törten Bauhaus estate in 2011 .
