Ferdinand Reynold Schoeman

Ferdinand Reynold Schoeman (born July 26, 1943 in Bloemfontein , Orange Free State ) is a South African phycologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Schoeman ".

Life

From 1961, Schoeman studied at the University of the Orange Free State , where he obtained a Master of Science degree in 1965 . In 1971 he received his Doctor of Science degree from the University of Pretoria . In 1966 he became a technical assistant at the botanical department of the University of the Free State and in 1967 a lecturer. In 1968 he became a research fellow at the National Institute for Water Research (NIWR) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria . In 1976 Schoeman was appointed director of research at the National Institute for Water Research. Schoeman studied the taxonomy, morphology, and ecology of diatoms , particularly as indicators of water quality. Together with Robert Eldred Mostert Archibald (* 1940) he wrote the three-part work The diatom flora of southern Africa between 1976 and 1980 . Schoeman described over 60 new types of diatoms from numerous genera, including Achnanthes , Actinella , Amphora , Cocconeis , Cymbella , Eunotia , Fragilaria , Navicula and Pinnularia .

Dedication names

The diatom species Nupela schoemaniana , Achnanthes schoemaniana and Navicula schoemaniana are named after Schoeman .
