Moratau , the "Fergusson Island", is a volcanic , approximately 1437 km² island in the Pacific Ocean . It is the largest of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands , which are part of the Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea . In the north, the minimal 3.9 km wide Moresby Strait separates Fergusson from Goodenough Island . A few kilometers south of Fergusson Island is Normanby Island , from which it is separated by the 3.4 km wide Dawson Strait .

The 23 villages in the east of the island belong to the Dobu Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area, which also includes part of the neighboring Normanby Island to the southeast . The remaining settlements in the western part of the island form the West Fergusson Rural LLG Area. Kalokalo on the west coast of the island is the largest town not only on Fergusson Island, but also in the entire D'Entrecasteaux Islands, with a population of 1,381 (2000 census).
history
The island was visited in 1873 by Captain John Moresby , who named it after James Fergusson of Kilkerran (1873–1874 Governor of New Zealand ).
description
Fergusson is characterized by mountainous terrain covered by tropical rainforest . There are three large volcanoes on the island . The coastal areas are used for agriculture.
The highest point on the island with 2073 m, Mount Kilkerran , is located near Wadalei in the northeast. Seymour Bay lies on the west coast, Sebutuia Bay in the east and Hughes Bay in the north. The main settlements, Salamo and Mapamoiwa , are on the south coast. In the mid-1990s gold was discovered near Wapolu on the north coast.
Exclusively on the Fergusson Island lives in a small range of the first time in 1952 mentioned by Eleanor MO Laurie Fergusson dactylopsila ( Dactylopsila tatei ), and Tate's Triok one called dactylopsila from the family of Gleitbeutler of on, endangered Red List species the IUCN as "Endangered" (endangered) is classified. It is also home to the Fergusson pheasant pigeon , a subspecies of the pheasant pigeon .
The Amphlett Group is 10 km north of the island .
