Fernand Gobet

Fernand Gobet (born February 12, 1962 in Romont , Switzerland) is a Swiss chess master and a cognitive scientist . He has held the title of International Master since 1985 . In 1981 he became Swiss junior champion and in 1996 won the Swiss team championship with Geneva. He played at three Chess Olympiads ( 1982 , 1984 and 1988 ). In 1985 in Lucerne he fought for his homeland in the first team world championship when Viktor Korchnoi won a gold medal on the first board.

His Elo rating is 2386 (as of June 2015), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played a rated game since the federal tournament held in Friborg in May 2012 . In July 1983 and January 1989, Gobet achieved his highest rating of 2,415.

He is Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Liverpool University , where he conducts research in the field of expert cognition . Among other topics, he has examined chess psychology and language acquisition in children. He is an expert in modeling cognitive processes and developed the CHREST cognitive architecture .
