Fernando de Arteaga y Pereira

Fernando de Arteaga y Pereira (born August 11, 1851 in Barcelona , † February 17, 1934 in Cruz Quebrada - Dafundo ) was a Spanish poet, Romanist and Hispanist who worked in England.

Life

Arteaga studied in Barcelona and was there, as well as in Madrid, high school teacher for Latin, history and Spanish literature. He went to England in 1890 and toured the American continent on behalf of a railway construction company. From 1893 he was assistant to Henry Butler Clarke at the Taylor Institution (for European languages) at Oxford University and was his successor as a teacher of Spanish in 1894. From 1907 he was a lecturer at Oxford, from 1921 until his retirement in 1927 professor of Spanish. He was also a lecturer in Spanish and Italian at the University of Birmingham from 1909 to 1927 .

Arteaga was in contact with Àngel Guimerà , Benito Pérez Galdós and Manuel Machado , and also with Frederick York Powell .

Fernando de Arteaga was the brother of the poet José María Arteaga Pereira (1846-1913).
