Fernando de Rojas

Fernando de Rojas (* between 1461 and 1476 in La Puebla de Montalbán , today the province of Toledo ; † 1541 ) was a Spanish lawyer and writer of the late Middle Ages .

He was born in La Puebla de Montalbán ( Toledo ) between 1461 and 1476 . In 1488 Rojas went to Salamanca , where he studied law , Latin , philosophy and other subjects. From 1507 he lived in Talavera , where he earned his living as a lawyer. In 1538 he became mayor of the city. The von Rojas family was originally Jewish, probably his grandfather converted to Christianity. In Talavera he also met his future wife Leonor Alvárez de Montalbán, who also came from a converted family. The only known writer is the tragic comedy La Celestina , published for the first time in 1499 under the name "Comedia de Calisto y Melibea".
