Fernando de los Llanos and Fernando Yáñez: High Altar of the Cathedral of Valencia , 1507

Fernando de los Llanos was a Spanish Renaissance painter who worked in the Valencia region around 1510 . As its name suggests, it is said to come from Santa María de los Llanos in the province of Cuenca .

life and work

Together with Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina, Fernando de los Llanos painted the twelve panels of the high altar in the Cathedral of Valencia from 1507 to 1510 . They show scenes from the life of Jesus and scenes from the life of Mary .

The style is influenced by Leonardo da Vinci , which leads to the assumption that either Fernando de los Llanos or Fernando Yáñez is the 'Fernando spagnuolo' mentioned by Vasari as a collaborator of Leonardo.

Although Fernando de los Llanos is somewhat inferior to Fernando Yáñez in artistic skill, the two painters together are seen as particularly influential in the development of a Spanish style of the High Renaissance in the region. Around them the Renaissance School of Valencia ( Spanish escuela renacentista valenciana) is formed.

To followers or disciples of Fernando de los Llanos is Master of Alcira expected.
