Kees (toponym)

Schlatenkees in East Tyrol

In certain areas of Tyrol and Salzburg, Kees is the name for a glacier . Today it is mainly found as part of glacier names.

While the term Ferner  ( derived from Firn ) is used in the west of Tyrol, the name Kees occurs in the Zillertal Alps  and the Hohe Tauern . The border between the occurrences is formed by the Zillertal and in its extension the Tux main ridge . At the head of the Tux Valley , Tuxer Ferner and Gefrorene-Wand-Kees can be found next to each other.

In the Zillertal, Kees refers not only to the ice of the glacier, but also to the moraine gravel in front of it . The glacier creek is called Keeswasser .

The origin of the term is not clear, it is probably related to Old High German chēs (= ice, frost).
