Ferocactus wislizeni is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

Ferocactus wislizeni usually grows individually with spherical to columnar shoots and reaches heights of up to 3 meters with a diameter of 80 centimeters. There are 20 to 30 scarcely tubercular ribs . The areoles on it are far apart in young plants and later almost flow together. The different thorns arising from it are white to red or gray. The four central spines cross, are transversely banded and 8 to 10 centimeters long. The lowest of them are strongest, flattened and often curved like a hook. The shape of the approximately twelve, 4 to 5 centimeters long radial spines varies from needle-like to bristle-like.

The funnel-shaped, yellow to yellowish orange to red flowers reach a length of 4 to 5 centimeters and have the same diameter. The up to 5 centimeters long, egg-shaped fruits are yellow when ripe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus wislizeni is common in the United States in the states of Arizona , New Mexico, and Texas, and in the Mexican states of Sonora , Sinaloa, and Chihuahua .

The first description as Echinocactus wislizeni was in 1848 by George Engelmann . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
