The Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 was a Gran Turismo - coupe of the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari . The vehicle was presented in 1972. It underwent numerous further developments and was produced with larger engines and changed names until 1989.

The concept

The 365 GT4 2 + 2 replaced the Ferrari 365 GT 2 + 2 . Technically, the 365 GT4 2 + 2 corresponded to the "Il Gobbone", only the wheelbase was lengthened by twenty centimeters. The car, however, appealed to a different clientele. The preferred clientele included business people who wanted to drive a Ferrari but did not want to conjure up the eye-catching appearance of the Daytona or its successor, the 365 GT / 4 BB. Accordingly, the car was not designed as a two-seater sports coupé, but as a four-seater Gran Turismo. Paolo Martin designed a classic, sober bodywork for Pininfarina , which Sergio Pininfarina described as "unobtrusively haunting" and one of his best designs. The German importer Helmut Becker ( Auto Becker ) put it this way: “Only the eye of the connoisseur recognizes him. Its inconspicuous elegance expresses almost understatement. Driving a Ferrari without anyone noticing. He has something of a very serious business partner. ” After the Daytona, the 365 GT / 4 2 + 2 was the second production model from Ferrari that had what is known as the“ Pininfarina bead ”that wrapped around the entire vehicle and clearly divided it into an upper and a lower part. This made the rather unspectacular shape of the car both more elegant and more dynamic. However, Ferrari customers could not always relate to the inconspicuous elegance of the 365 GT4 2 + 2: Many found it "too unspectacular, too expansive, perhaps too much Ford Granada".

Development history

The Ferrari 365 GT 2 + 2 made its debut at the 1972 Paris Salon, where it was presented at the stand of the French Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi . A total of around 470 vehicles were built by 1976. The cars were very expensive. On the Swiss market they cost around CHF 10,000 more than an Aston Martin V8 or a Lamborghini Espada .

The concept of having a high-performance twelve-cylinder in the range that was not a classic sports car, but rather aimed at business people, nevertheless worked for Ferrari: The 365 GT / 4 2 + 2 was later delivered with larger engines and even an automatic transmission and up to Built in 1989. With a production time of 17 years, it and its direct successors (400 and 412 series) are among the longest-produced series in the automotive industry as a whole (the Ferrari 400 was built a total of 1,809 times during this time (400 GT, 400 Automatic, 400i models and 400i Automatic), the Ferrari 412 576 times.)
