The fortress of Mut ( Turkish Mut Kalesi ) is located on a hill in the center of the city of Mut , the ancient Klaudiopolis (also Claudiopolis) in the southern Turkish province of Mersin .
The originally Byzantine fortress was built on the site of a prehistoric settlement. It was conquered by the Karamanids in 1225 together with Ermenek , Gülnar and Silifke and later rebuilt.
description
The fortress occupies the highest point in the city and is located about 200 meters south of the D-715 thoroughfare from Karaman to Silifke. It consists of two courtyards. The surrounding walls, partly built from Roman spolia blocks, follow the nature of the terrain. They are interrupted at irregular intervals by bastions , most of which are rectangular, but also hexagonal or round. The north-western side of the enclosure leads along a rock break to the valley of the Mut Çayı River. Two gates lead into the larger, lower-lying east courtyard, which was probably intended as a residential area, and one into the west courtyard. At the highest point there is a free-standing, three-storey donjon that was built by the Karamanids. One of the eastern gates bears a Karamanid building inscription. The two gates of the east courtyard were developed as portals during the Ottoman period. The dividing wall between the two courtyards has been largely destroyed today, the outer walls and the tower have been partially restored.
