Feszty panorama

The Arrival of the Hungarians ( Hungarian Feszty-körkép ) is a nearly 1,800 sqm large circular painting , named after the Hungarian painter Árpád Feszty .

history

During a visit to Paris in 1891, Feszty saw a circular painting of a battle of Napoleon . He was so enthusiastic about this form of representation that he decided to create a round picture of the Flood . His father-in-law Mór Jókai warned him about the financing problems of such a company, which in addition to the picture itself also needed a building and a sufficient number of public visitors for the investment to pay off. Finally, Feszty accepted his father-in-law's proposal to paint the "Entry of Hungarians" into the Carpathian Basin and exhibit it at the Budapest Millennium Exhibition in 1896 , in view of the upcoming 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest .

At that time, 140,000 forints were brought into a limited partnership for the project . Under the direction of Feszty from 1892 to 1894 up to 20 artists painted at times on the canvas imported from Belgium in order to present the work of art to the public on Whitsun Sunday 1894. Some landscapes are from László Mednyánszky ; the battle scenes are due to Pál Vágó . Other artists involved were Adolf Barsy , Dániel Mihalik , Ferenc Olgyay , Celesztin Pállya , Béla Spányi , Ignác Ujvári and Károly Ziegler . The round picture was first exhibited in a round hall on the site of today's Museum of Fine Arts . The picture was one of the greatest attractions of the Millennium Exhibition, but the income did not cover the cost of the picture and Feszty ran into great financial difficulties.

After the anniversary celebration, the picture was exhibited in London from 1899 to 1909 , and then on his return in a new building in the City Park, as the old hall has meanwhile been torn down and replaced by the Museum of Fine Arts. During the Battle of Budapest (1944) this building was hit by a bomb and the picture was badly damaged. The canvas was then cut into eight-meter-wide pieces, rolled up and stored. The poorly professional storage worsened the condition of the picture.

Only in 1991 began Polish experts under the direction of two restorers Stanislav Filipiak and Ryszard Wojtowicz with the restoration of the image and after four years it was 1995 again opened to the public. Since then it has been on display in the southern Hungarian city of Ópusztaszer . Visitors can view the painting over walkways.
