Fettberg ( English fatberg based on iceberg , ' Eisberg ' ) is a term coined in England for large lumps of fat , sanitary towels , wet wipes and similar objects in sewage systems that do not disintegrate like toilet paper . The fatty components of this mass are known as FOGs , short for fats, oils and greases , fats, oils and grease .

In August 2013, the British fatbergs became internationally known when Thames Water Works reported a lump the size of a bus with an estimated mass of 15 tons that they had found in the borough of Kingston - the largest in London to date. He was noticed because he almost completely blocked a sewer pipe. It took workers three weeks to remove the lump and prevent an impending sewage flood in Kingston. According to Thames Water, such problems are becoming more common. Costs would be one million per month pounds (about 1.15 million euros incurred) for the removal of pipe blockages.

In May 2014, an even larger mountain of fat of around 100 tons was discovered in Manchester . It was dissolved with high-pressure water jets, sucked off and processed into biodiesel . Further processing into soap was also considered. A large-scale plant has been in operation in the London borough of Beckton since August 2015, generating 130 gigawatt hours of energy per year from sewage fats and other fat waste . This corresponds to the needs of almost 40,000 average residential buildings.

The largest mountain of fat to date was discovered by chance by sewer workers in the London borough of Whitechapel in early September 2017 . With a length of approx. 250 meters, it weighed approx. 130 tons, which is almost the weight of a full-grown blue whale .

On January 8, 2019, a 64 meter long mountain of fat was discovered in the county of Devon near Sidmouth .

Germany

A German patent from 2000 for a device for separating edible fats and wastewater also speaks of "fat mountains". In addition, it is often mandatory for commercial operations in Germany to install so-called grease separators , which are supposed to remove the grease from the wastewater before it is fed into the general sewer system.
