Trajectory of the fireball on October 13, 2009

The fireball of October 13, 2009 was an unexpected, spectacular celestial event in the early evening twilight that caught the attention of numerous people in northern Germany , the Netherlands , Belgium and Denmark .

Observations

Shortly after sunset, around 6:58 p.m., a bright ball of fire moved from southwest to northeast over the northern Netherlands in the direction of Dollart and the North German Wadden Sea . The glow lasted for several seconds and was photographed by some observers. Robert Mikaelyan took a particularly impressive series of photos from Groningen . One of his pictures was published on October 15 as the Astronomy Picture of the Day . Towards the end of the trajectory, the meteoroid broke into several pieces. Many witnesses in the northern Netherlands reported thundering noises and a bang. The infrasound could even be registered in Kazakhstan , more than 3000 kilometers away . A trail of smoke remained in the sky , which was quickly deformed by high-altitude winds , but was still clearly visible for several minutes at dusk. The smoke trail in particular is exceptionally well documented through photographs from different angles.

Misjudgments and reports

Numerous eyewitnesses suspected a shot down rocket, a crashed airplane, burned up space debris or a UFO as the cause. The event looked so threatening and unfamiliar that distances, heights and speeds were almost always seriously underestimated. Many eyewitnesses assumed a crash a few hundred meters away, although in many cases the event occurred more than a hundred kilometers away. In some regions of the Netherlands and northern Germany, the police and fire departments were alerted . The press, radio and television reported extensively on the fire meteor and sighting reports spread very quickly on the Internet.

Evaluation and search for meteorites

The evaluation of testimonies and pictures were carried out by Thomas Grau, among others. He had already successfully searched for the Baltic Sea meteorite at the beginning of the same year . Thomas Grau was able to narrow down the presumed case area to the Wadden Sea between the city of Norden and the island of Juist . Since the event took place at high tide, there is a possibility that meteorites were slowed down by the water and gently sank to the tidal flats. A week-long, intensive search in the Wadden Sea and on the East Frisian coast was unsuccessful.
