History and equipment

In contrast to the Fire Compagnie Alzey , which was first mentioned in writing in 1799 , the Meißen volunteer fire brigade is the oldest voluntary fire brigade in Germany to be founded as a volunteer fire brigade according to today's understanding. On October 19, 1840, the city council of Meissen began recruiting volunteers for a fire fighting and rescue corps to be formed . Eight days later on November 27, 1840, 132 volunteers had registered and on July 17, 1841 their engagement took place in the town hall of Meißen. A plaque attached to the former home of the first fire chief commemorates the founding of the FF Meissen.

The uniforms of the FF Meissen initially consisted of gray linen skirts with black buttons. The department heads wore gray, black, and red collars on their uniforms. The syringe team wore hats, which the foremen also had a white border around them. The rescue teams wore spiked helmets , the captain, deputy and adjutant also wore bushes of horsehair on their helmets. In 1864, with members of a local gymnastics club, a gymnast fire brigade was founded as an aid team without equipment and incorporated into the FF Meißen.
