The Alzey volunteer fire brigade is the oldest known fire brigade in Germany. It consists of an active emergency department with around 50 emergency services in the center of Alzey , a youth fire brigade , the senior citizens' and honorary department as well as the fire brigade and town band. The fire station of the volunteer fire brigade (FF) Alzey, which was newly occupied in March 2019, is located on the western outskirts of Alzey at Kreuznacher Straße 112.

History and equipment

In contrast to the Meißen volunteer fire brigade founded in 1840 , which is considered the oldest volunteer fire brigade according to today's understanding, the fire brigade in Alzey was first mentioned in writing on September 10, 1799 as a fire company in the agency register of the city of Alzey:

"Since the Alzey community has tried to repair the fire heater and try to restore it to a perfect condition, it is necessary ... to set up a so-called fire company ... (to) visualize the fire heater and the associated instruments ... and in the worst case to direct the whole business of the fire engine when the fire breaks out. "

It was not until 1864, after the city had consulted with Carl Weiser, the commander of the Mainz fire brigade, that the Alzey volunteer fire brigade was founded.

Initially, the equipment consisted of leather fire buckets , ladders, ripping tools and a fire engine . Three more fire engines were added later, one of which was donated by the Aachen Fire Insurance Company , so that the fire brigade was equipped with 4 fire engines in 1864. Two hose trolleys were also purchased by 1892 . In 1934, a used delivery van was purchased with its own funds and converted into a cart with a motorized sprayer in-house by the fire brigade . Another vehicle and an additional motorized sprayer were purchased later so that the fire brigade could provide a complete motorized fire engine . At the beginning of the 1940s, the fire brigade received a motor vehicle syringe 8 or LF 8 ( light fire fighting vehicle of the fire police and volunteer fire brigades at the time). In 1944 two LF 15 and another LF 8 were added. The equipment and vehicles of the Alzeyer fire brigade were not damaged during the Second World War and were completely preserved.

Today the fleet consists of 17 vehicles of various types. The FF Alzey is also a component of the hazardous goods train in the Alzey-Worms district .

In addition to the Alzey fire department, there are Dautenheim , Heimersheim and Weinheim fire brigades with around 55 emergency services in the Alzey districts . In 2007 an emergency fire fighting group vehicle HLF 10/10 was purchased for the three district fire brigades, which is stationed alternately in one of the three districts for 3 months. The district fire brigades and the Alzey fire department support each other. The district fire brigades are also alerted for medium-sized and larger operations, for example.

The approximately 250 deployments of FF Alzey annually are dispatched by the integrated control center of the Mainz professional fire brigade . The area of operation includes the city of Alzey and its districts, various federal and country roads as well as around 50 kilometers of federal motorway 63 and federal motorway 61 and the Alzey motorway junction .

Youth fire brigade

The youth fire department of the city of Alzey was founded in 1967 and is one of the oldest youth fire departments in Germany. Currently, more than 50% of the active department at FF Alzey is made up of members of the youth fire brigade that they have taken over. The FF Alzey portable fire pump is ready for use, but is primarily used by the youth fire brigade.

Fire brigade and city chapel

The fire brigade and town band, founded in 1893 as a marching band, is today a classic wind orchestra consisting of a wooden set, high brass, deep brass and percussion. The highlights of the orchestra include winning the gold medal in the competition of the German Fire Brigade Association in 1980 and a concert on the occasion of the visit of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Elizabeth II in Mainz in 1978.
