Location of Weinheim in Rhineland-Palatinate

Weinheim is the largest district of the city of Alzey with over 1,900 inhabitants, 772 already mentioned in a document. Agriculture and especially viticulture were already highly developed, so it can be assumed that people settled here much earlier.

Weinheim has a Protestant and a Catholic church, old mills: like the Neumühle, the Poppenschänke or the Würzmühle. Today there are four restaurants, three bakeries, a butcher, a pharmacy, banks, a kindergarten, a primary school, and a sports hall. Club life is very pronounced in Weinheim. The Rheinhessische Weinkönigin 1999 is from Weinheim, furthermore Weinheim has already produced seven Alzeyer wine queens, including the reigning Alzeyer wine queen Katharina Matheis.

geography

geology

Weinheim became famous for the natural monuments “ Trift ” and “Zeilstück” as well as the former natural monument “Wirtsmühle”. During the sand extraction in the former sand pits, a rich spectrum of exceptionally well-preserved fossils came to light, which demonstrate the optimal living conditions around 30 million years ago on the subtropical coasts of Weinheim Bay. The shells of oysters, velvet clams and other sea clams and snails, traces of rays and the ribs of a manatee can be discovered on the steep face of the "Trift". As has been the case for over 150 years, the “Trift” and “Zeilstück” natural monuments are still the destinations of scientific excursions to this day. One fossil, the sea snail Cerithium Weinheimense, has only been found in the Weinheim Bay so far and is the name given to the 10 km long circular hiking trail "Weinheimense Route". The starting and finishing point of the circular hiking trail is the Trift natural monument. Along the hiking trail, 13 information boards provide insights into the regional geology and geological history as well as the local flora and fauna. The first section of the circular hiking trail was opened in September 2012, on June 2, 2013 the entire circular hiking trail was officially opened.

coat of arms

The shield is divided and split at the bottom. The golden head of the shield shows a green, leafy grape , at the bottom left in silver a black cross ( Teutonic Knights ), at the bottom right in black a red-crowned and reinforced golden lion ( Electoral Palatinate ).

The arrangement of the individual fields deviated from the old seal shape because the slender cross would appear too massive compared to the other two parts.
