The fire department museum Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu is a fire department museum in Kaufbeuren .

Opened in 1996, the museum is dedicated to the history of fire fighting and the fire service . The basis of the collection is a collection of exhibits on the subject compiled by fire fighters in the city from 1986 onwards. The focus of the exhibition is the history of fire protection from the middle of the 19th century, when the first volunteer fire brigades were founded. The museum is a member of the "Working Group of Fire Brigade Museums in Germany". In June 2017 the museum moved from the former Spittelmühle (at the Spittelmühlkreuzung) to new and significantly more representative rooms on the (former) Momm site.

Club history

Members of the Kaufbeuren volunteer fire brigade came together in 1986 to select a collection from the exhibits. After the fire brigade moved to its current location in the following year, the exhibits were deposited in the Spittelmühle. In addition, a decommissioned Magirus-Deutz TLF 15 tank tender was acquired from the city of Kaufbeuren. The restoration of the vehicle fleet is of particular interest to this day. The tool shed from Pfronten is the largest exhibit of the association, it was moved in 1991 using a low-loader and rebuilt in Kaufbeuren. The association was founded as the Kaufbeuren-Ostallgäu e. V. took place in 1992 with an entry in the association register.

In 1996 the fire brigade museum in Spittelmühle was officially opened. In the years 2004–2006, the museum took part in the schule @ museum project in cooperation with the Jakob-Brucker-Gymnasium Kaufbeuren , taking a museum guide for young people and the CD entitled The Kaufbeurer Fire Brigade during World War II into account. In 2011, the second children's path in Germany was opened, which is intended to convey information on fire protection in a child-friendly way.

With the move in June 2017, the exhibition was significantly expanded. The emergency vehicles that were previously stored in a depot can now be found in the public area.

exhibition

The exhibition is housed on around 1,200 square meters in a building of the former "Spinnerei u. Weberei Momm" (for comparison: there was around 300 square meters in the Spittelmühle). The vehicle fleet includes nine historic vehicles. In addition to historical work tools such as a horse-drawn Magirus - fire engine from the year 1929, the collection of roadworthy includes fire engines Daimler Benz Löschgruppenfahrzeuge , between 1942 and 1967, a turntable ladder -Mercedes Benz 1969 a pumper Company Magirus-Deutz of 1955 and portable pump vehicles of Type VW Bully and Ford-Taunus from the 1960s.

Using dioramas and models, the history of the establishment of volunteer fire brigades from the middle of the 19th century is exhibited, which, with further exhibits and unique items, extends into the time of the Kaufbeurer fire brigade in the 20th century. Efforts are still being made today to acquire additional exhibits in order to present them to interested visitors.

particularities

In particular, the museum has exhibits on vehicles, some of which are rarely found today. In addition, a replicated air raid shelter with original components and preserved audio and video documents of the air raids from the Second World War is part of the museum's inventory.

Education and Museum Pedagogy

In 2006 the museum presented itself as a cooperation partner of the local Jakob-Brucker-Gymnasium in the competition schule @ museum ; The joint project The Kaufbeurer Fire Brigade in World War II , which also includes a school book on the Kaufbeurer fire brigade history, a project book for teachers and a CD, was presented as one of the nine final teams at the closing event in the Frankfurt Museum of Communication. A special feature of educational interest is the children's trail, which opened in 2011, as it is no longer found in Germany apart from the German Fire Brigade Museum in Fulda . Eight stations present the history and technology of the fire brigade in a child-friendly way and provide information on fire protection.

City tour

Upon registration, the association offers a “Fire and Flame” city tour, which thematically reflects the history of the fire service in Kaufbeuren from the beginning in 1858 until today. The tour generally begins at the town hall and ends with a guided tour of the fire brigade museum followed by a film screening.
