Figshare is a commercial Internet-based data storage service in which scientists can publish complete research results, but also individual data sets, graphics, images, presentations, posters and videos.

In contrast to classic scientific publications , not only can filtered and processed data, but also the underlying original data be made public for other researchers. In particular, the publication of negative results is possible, which is a measure against publication bias and an element of open science .

The publications receive a DOI so that they can be cited. There is an integration of ORCID . All content can be placed under a Creative Commons license .

Macmillan Publishers was originally behind Figshare ; today the service is part of the Nature Publishing Group , which is part of the Springer Nature publishing group .

Alternatives to Figshare are Zenodo , an online storage service operated by CERN , the data repository GitHub, which can be used not only by software developers but also in general for storing and sharing data, i.e. also for research data and publications, but also for specialized services like Bioshare.org or scientific social networks like Academia.edu , ResearchGate and all other open access repositories .
