The Neidpath Viaduct is a former railway viaduct near the Scottish town of Peebles in the Council Area Scottish Borders . The building, which is now only used by pedestrians, was included in the Scottish monument lists in 1971 in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with the nearby South Park Wood Railway Tunnel, it forms a category B monument ensemble.

history

The builder of the viaduct was the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway . When the bridge opened in 1864, the company was already part of the Caledonian Railway . The Neidpath Viaduct formed part of the main line of the Caledonian Railway between Glasgow and Carlisle . When the line was closed in the 1950s, the viaduct was used for a few years before it became obsolete in the 1960s. Today it serves as a pedestrian bridge. In 2011, the Neidpath Viaduct was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. In the same year, however, his condition was classified as good with moderate risk.

description

Pedestrian path over the viaduct

The Neidpath Viaduct crosses the Tweed around 1.5 km west of Peebles. The masonry viaduct spans the river with eight lined round arches . These have clear widths of 9.9 m with a maximum clear height of 9.8 m. Due to its location within a curve with a radius of 402 m, the viaduct is curved. The facades of the stone arch bridge, like the protruding pillars with their rounded ice breakers , are clad with embossed stone blocks. A cast iron railing delimits the bridge.
