Fiji Water is a spring water that was at least originally taken from an artesian well in Fiji .
The water is advertised as being free of any pollution, as it is created and bottled far away from major industry (on the island of Viti Levu ). That is why the water is particularly beneficial to health. In addition, the water is bottled using a special process (see also: Disadvantages of beverages in PET bottles ), which prevents contact with the atmosphere “until the consumer opens the bottle”. Although most consumers taste no difference to "normal" water, it is sometimes claimed that Fiji Water has an extraordinary taste due to its special ingredients (or their composition).
The FIJI Water Company LLC was founded in 1996 and delivered in 1997, the first bottles in the United States. She later expanded sales to Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, the Caribbean and Australia. Since then, water has developed into a lifestyle product, especially in the USA, and has been featured in several films. Because of its social commitment in Fiji, the company received the 2004 Ace Award from the US State Department .
Critics complain that it is extremely time-consuming to bring the water to America and that the environment is disproportionately polluted. The company is countering this criticism with a voluntary commitment to reduce the burden on production and sales.
The osmolarity of the water is very low in relation to the sodium density. It is therefore hypotonic, like distilled water . If an athlete were to drink too much of this water after endurance sports , it would result in dangerous hyponatremia .
