It is a branch of the parish Frauenberg an der Enns and dedicated to St. John the Baptist . Like the parish church of the Sacrifice of Mary in Frauenberg, it is also incorporated into the Admont Abbey and is located in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

The municipality of Ardning originally belonged to the large mother parish of St. Amandus in Admont, even before the Admont monastery was founded (1074). Due to the fact that the settlement in Ardning is far away from Admont, it seemed desirable to have their own church in the village so that the residents of Ardning did not have to go to Admont to attend church services and receive the sacraments. However, it is not known when the first church was built in Ardning. But there must have already been a house of worship in the late 13th century, because a "sacristan chaste" is mentioned in a land register from Admont Abbey from around 1280. It was not entirely by chance that the patronage was chosen: Churches were often consecrated to John the Baptist , which originally did not form the seat of a separate parish , but initially only had the right to baptize and mostly also to the right to burial. In Ardning, both should have existed from the beginning, because the cemetery that surrounds the church was laid out very early. According to old tradition, Abbot Georg Lueger von Admont had the church rebuilt in Gothic style around 1410, and at least a small part of the masonry of the presbytery and nave could come from this time. Around this time, the Marian pilgrimage , which soon became of great importance, began on the nearby Kulm , where pastoral care was initially also carried out directly by Admont Abbey , until the independent parish of Frauenberg was established around the middle of the 16th century . Ardning with its Johanneskirche has now been subordinated to this new parish. It is known from around 1590 that the pastor of Frauenberg or his chaplain came to Ardning seven days a year to celebrate church service.

Johanneskirche before the fire in 1946

In the 17th century, the Admont abbot, Raimund von Rehling, had the Ardninger church completely renovated in the early Baroque style . On August 16, 1666 he rededicated the church. In the course of the reorganization and consolidation of the parish network operated by Emperor Josef II, the creation of a so-called "local curatie" was also planned at the Johannes Church, which was to be filled with a Benedictine from Admont. The chaplaincy was completely taken from the parish of Frauenberg , and in autumn 1786 Father Nonnosus Streubl OSB started his service as the first “local curate” of Ardning after the old sacristan's house had been redesigned into a rectory.

In 1878 this independent local curatia Ardning was abolished and the pastor's parish was again affiliated with the mother parish in Frauenberg , and the Johannes church became a subsidiary church of the parish and pilgrimage church in Frauenberg on the Enns .

In 1946 a devastating fire occurred due to flying sparks from the nearby railway, which largely cremated the church and the rectory and destroyed some irreplaceable works of art, including two angels by the sculptor Josef Stammel and a late Gothic Anna Selbdritt group. During the reconstruction, which was largely financed by insurance funds, the diocese of Seckau took over the construction of the church and the Admont Abbey built a new parsonage. The Johanneskirche in Ardningen was rebuilt in a simple, baroque style.

1956 than 2015 pastors lived in the rectory Ardning before by the current Superior and Pastor of Ms. Berg , P. Maximilian Schiefermüller both Sprengel in, which is also responsible for the store Ardning in pastoral point of OSB, a stronger cooperation parish Fraunberg is operated .

Architecture and equipment

The Ardning branch church is a single-nave church with a cross vault on wall pillars. The center is the baroque tabernacle structure , which was transferred here from Premstätten Castle in 1980 . Above it is an altarpiece depicting St. Benedict of Nursia . In the apse there are high-quality statues of St. John the Baptist (patron saint ) and St. John the Evangelist , from the late 17th century or early 18th century , on consoles . They come from the Frauenberg parish church and were only brought to Ardning in 2016. The Way of the Cross is the work of the Benedictine Basilia Gürth OSB. The neo-baroque celebration altar and ambo (both made around 1980) originally come from the parish church of Bad Zell ( Upper Austria) and were donated to Ardning in 2019.
