from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maximilian Schiefermüller OSB (bourgeois Karl-Michael; born October 18, 1981 in Steyr , Upper Austria ) is a Benedictine and prior of Admont Abbey in Styria , historian, archivist and librarian of the Admont Abbey Library , the largest monastery library in the world.

Life

Karl Schiefermüller grew up in the Upper Austrian spa town of Bad Zell . After graduating from the BORG in Perg , he began studying history (Mag.phil.) And theology (Mag.theol.) At the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg in 2001 . His theological diploma thesis ( From pilgrimage to wellness ) discusses the history of Hedwigsbründl in Bad Zell, while his historical diploma thesis illuminates the effects of the Josephine reforms using the example of the Admont Abbey .

In 2002 he entered the Admont Benedictine monastery as a novice and took the religious name "Maximilian". Four years later, on April 23, 2006, he made his perpetual profession with Abbot Bruno Hubl OSB and in 2009 he was ordained a priest in the Admont Collegiate Church by Bishop Egon Kapellari .

Schiefermüller is curator of the ancient art of Admont Abbey. In March 2014 he succeeded the longtime and profane archivist and monastery librarian Johann Tomaschek . He is also pastor of the parish association Frauenberg an der Enns , Ardning and Hall near Admont . During his tenure, extensive measures were taken to preserve the Admont Abbey Library , which became necessary due to a pest infestation. In addition, with the holdings of the Admont Abbey Library, the Abbey Archives have taken an important and fundamental step into the modern age with regard to digitization and IT cataloging.

In March 2017 he was appointed prior of the Admont Abbey by Abbot Gerhard Hafner OSB . Bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl authorized Schiefermüller to donate the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau.

During his tenure, the discovery of two fragments of the abrogan in the holdings of the Admont Abbey Library, which were made around the year 800, was published. The fragments were used for a book cover in the 18th century and stored in a folder by restorers in 1963 and may have come from a bookbinder in Steyr or Graz , who probably had them from monasteries such as Mondsee Monastery .

Schiefermüller's research focuses on the history of the Admont Benedictine monastery and its possessions, the history of the Benedictine order in Austria, and the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel region, especially the market town of Bad Zell .

Schiefermüller has been a correspondent for the Historical Commission for Styria since 2019 .

Frauenberg on the Enns

In September 2015 the term of office of the current superior and pastor of Frauenberg, Fr. Maximilian Schiefermüller, began. In 2016, in the "Holy Year of Mercy", a "Holy Gate" was opened in Frauenberg and the existing five-part chime was extended by three bells. Logging work around the church was carried out, a new Marienkapelle was built in the "intercession garden" and some rooms in the baroque rectory were renovated. On the occasion of a visit to Pope Francis , the Admont Monastery and Abbot Gerhard Hafner presented a modern lecture cross by the artist Wendelin Pressl from the Frauenberg parish church. From April to October 2018, the church underwent a thorough exterior renovation and the baroque, cream-colored facade design was restored. The conclusion was the consecration of the "Linz Bell" by the Abbot of Admont .

Schiefermüller is the initiator and founder of the monthly "Pilgrimage for Spiritual Vocations" that has been taking place since 2018.
