Church in Greith

The Greith branch church in the village of Greith in the municipality of Mariazell is a Roman Catholic branch church of the Gußwerk parish in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in the state of Styria . She is the St. Consecrated to Joseph . It is also known by the people as the "little marriage church".

history

In order to get to the next church from Greith or to attend a church service, the population either had to walk to the parish ten kilometers away in Weichselboden or to the church in Gußwerk, which is just as distant . Therefore, many people, especially the elderly and the infirm, were unable to attend church. For this reason, the population of Greith, Dürradmer and Ramsau decided to hold the masses in the house chapel of the Scholz Inn, which formerly belonged to St. Lambrecht Abbey . The impetus for this was provided by Father Hugo Pfundstein from Mariazell , who celebrated the services. However, the small room could no longer accommodate the growing crowd of churchgoers, so it was decided to build a small church. Planning began in 1956 and construction began the following year. Thanks to the help of the population, the small church was already opened on October 26, 1958 by Diocesan Bishop Josef Schoiswohl St. To be consecrated to Joseph.

On June 21, 1958, the church received a bell, donated by the Ortenburger family from Mariazell. It was consecrated by Abbot Koloman Holzinger from Admont Abbey . After a fundraising campaign among the population, an organ from Orgelbau Krenn in Graz was purchased in 1961 . It was consecrated by Placidus Wolf, abbot of Seckau Abbey . In 1978 the chapel on the forecourt, built by the Fluch family, was inaugurated. Since the dissolution of the Weichselboden parish, the church has been a branch church of the Gußwerk parish. Today the small Josefskirche is a popular wedding church.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built by master builder Hödl between 1956 and 1958 according to plans by Mariazell architect Kurt Weber-Mzell . In 1963 Alfred Wickenburg created the glass windows and the wooden statue of St. Josefs from 1957 was created by Alexander Silveri .
