The Roman Catholic branch church Oberthalheim is located in Oberthalheim in the market town of Timelkam in the Vöcklabruck district in Upper Austria . The church, consecrated to St. Anne , belongs to the Schwanenstadt dean's office in the Linz diocese . The former monastery church is a listed building .

history

The church was a monastery church from 1497 to 1784, a parish church from 1784 to 1950 and has been a chaplaincy (branch church) since 1950. It was created in the course of building a monastery in Oberthalheim - the first Paulaner monastery in German-speaking countries - initiated by Wolfgang von Polheim at the end of the 15th century. Before that, there was only one "palace parish" at Wartenburg Castle . His son Cyriak von Polheim and his descendants joined the Reformation . The monastery was converted into a hospital and the " predicants " preached in the church . In the course of the Counter-Reformation , the Protestant preachers were expelled and around 1640 the Protestant Polheimers sold the Wartenburg estate , in whose territory the monastery was located, to the Catholic Tobias Nutz von Goisernberg. After legal disputes, on the orders of Emperor Leopold I, the “old dilapidated St. Anna church in Thalhamb” came back into the possession of the Paulaner. They set up a monastery again, which was finally closed in the course of Josephinism in 1784. In 1790, large parts of the requisitioned monastery were sold by the state property administration to the owner of the Wartenburg estate, who then had the monastery largely demolished. In 1866 there was a fire in Oberthalheim that also spread to the church. The roof structure of the building was destroyed. During the renovation, the ceiling paintings of the church were painted over. In 1868 a new high altar was erected in place of the rich Rococo high altar. In the following years the pulpit was replaced by a simpler one.

In 1950 the monastery was bought by the Salesians of Don Bosco . Of these, a novitiate was established here. The building was expanded by several rooms. The novitiate lasted until 2011 when it was dissolved. In the same year the monastery was sold to a private company. The monastery is still used for church activities by the church choir, altar boys, etc. There is also an accommodation facility in the monastery.

The church building

The building has a length of around 35 m, a width of around 10 to 13 m and a clear height of 13.4 m. The oldest part of the church, built around 1495 in late Gothic style, is the three-bay choir with a 5/10 end and the single nave nave . From 1668 to 1671 the church was rebuilt, expanded and given a baroque style . After a fire in 1866, extensions and alterations were made and the 21.4 m high tower with onion helmet was built.

In front of the entrance to the church there is a baroque statue of the Immaculate Conception (1735) with the inscription on the base: “Covered with the sun and the moon under her feet” (Revelation 12: 1).
