The St. Johann branch church stands on a hill at 560  m above sea level. A. above the Völkendorf district in Villach . The Roman Catholic sacred building belonging to the parish Völkendorf is dedicated to John the Baptist .

history

St. Johann was first mentioned in a document in 1331. The church was damaged during one of the Turkish invasions in 1478. In the second half of the 16th century the church was Protestant . After 1600 the now again Catholic church, which was equipped with some real estate, belonged to the Arnoldstein monastery , later to the Villach Holy Spirit Hospital and the St. Kathrein Hospital. Church property was withdrawn in 1785 as part of the Josephine reforms .

The small Gothic church consists of a heavily renewed single -bay nave, a choir with a five-eighth end from the 14th century and a renewed roof turret with a pointed helmet. A two-story sacristy is attached to the south .

In the choir, a ribbed vault with a round keystone rests on consoles. There is a small Gothic sacrament niche on the south wall of the choir, and remains of frescoes in three zones from the late 14th century on the north wall. Traces of old painting have also been preserved on the slightly retracted triumphal arch. In the southern corner between the nave and the choir wall there is a console head with a grimacing face.

Facility

The high altar from the late 17th century shows the baptism of Christ on the altar panel . A heavily revised painting of the Crucifixion hangs on the south wall of the nave . The two Gothic statues of saints were previously walled in on the south-eastern outer wall.
