The initiative Filmstadt München e. V. exists since 1979 and is organized as a registered association. As an umbrella organization for twelve groups that organize film festivals in Munich, it pursues the goal of promoting continuous, demanding film work in Munich and making critical cinema possible. Members include the DOK.fest Munich and the short film festival Bunter Hund .

history

Filmmakers, media educators and cineastes joined forces in 1979 to form the Filmstadt München e. V. came together to create a counterbalance to the way in which films were made and shown in Munich back then, especially to the recently formed Filmwochen GmbH, which organizes the “glamorous” Munich Film Festival . There is no connection to Bavaria Filmstadt .

Groups such as The Team , the Pedagogical Action , Frauenkino eV , the Media Center and students were involved. The continuous film work, the closeness to the filmmakers of the AG Dok as well as the support of some city council members and Michael Farin from the cultural department allowed the members of the initiative to formulate a self-confident catalog of demands in 1984. In it, they demanded recognition of their cultural work and a minimum budget. This led to the establishment of the Filmstadt München e. V. , whose seat is the Munich Film Museum .

Ulla Weßler was the managing director from 1986 to June 2016, and Monika Haas has been her successor since June 2016.

aims

Right from the start, the initiators wanted continuous, demanding film work in the city and “promotion of the alternative, political film scene”. Her main areas of focus included New German Film , documentary films , films , children's films and films from the countries of origin of the former guest workers who have settled in Munich, i.e. Turkish, Greek and Italian films. Works that you have shot yourself should lead to a conscious use of the media, also as a reaction to private television.

Even today, the association designs measures that further develop and strengthen the cinematic infrastructure in Munich. This includes the coordination and financial support of film initiatives in Munich. The focus is on film culture in its diversity, in particular the neglected areas of non-commercial, neighborhood, social and cultural-political work with film with a focus on the foreigner and minority scene. The association relies on continuous work and aims to bring this film culture to the city districts.
