Filoteo Zassi

Filoteo Pietro Zassi OSBM (born January 20, 1654 in Mezzojuso near Palermo , † July 26, 1726 in Rome ) was Archbishop and Apostolic Vicar of Durrës (Durazzo).

Life

Filoteo Pietro Zassi, son of Filippo and Agnese Zassi, came from the Albanian minority of the Arbëresh . At fifteen he entered the Greek Catholic Order of Basilian one. He took his religious vows in November 1668. In 1693 he left the (since 1664 Basilian) monastery of Mezzojuso and went with Nilo Catalano (1647–1694) as a Catholic missionary to Himara in Albania. To the local vicar apostolic Zassi was appointed on May 30, 1696th His episcopal ordination for the Archdiocese of Durrës (Durazzo) took place in Rome in 1700. In 1715, after many years of conflict with the Orthodox bishop of the region, he left Himara and settled in Rome. There he worked as a Byzantine auxiliary bishop at the Church of St. Athanasius of the Pontifical Greek College.

After a total of twenty-six years in the episcopate, Filoteo Pietro Zassi died at the age of seventy-two on July 26, 1726 in Rome . His grave is in the Church of St. Athanasius.
