Finabel is an organization founded in 1953 to strengthen the cooperation and interoperability of the national armed forces of the member states of the European Union .
Principles
The order to Finabel is:
- Development and promotion of the interoperability of the armies
- Harmonization of concepts, doctrines and methods
- Development of a common European understanding of defense problems
history
The year 1953 was the founding year of the organization. The name is an acronym originally formed from the initial letters of the five founding members of F rance, I taly, N etherlands, Be lgien and L uxembourg and 3 years later expanded to include a A llemagne for Germany, which then finally to FINABEL led.
In October 1953, the Chiefs of Staff of the armies of France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg met for the first time. The official language at that time was still French. It was only after the turn of the millennium that the English language caught on with the accession of many new members.

- two crossed swords as identification with the land forces,
- twelve stars , as a symbol of the connection to Europe,
- a shield that symbolizes the defense of peace,
- and the two gods Mars and Minerva , symbols on the one hand for war and on the other hand for order
