Together with some surrounding settlements, it forms a local community in the municipality of Methoni in the municipality of Pylos-Nestoras . Under the old name Paralia Lachanadas Παραλία Λαχανάδας, the place was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1929 and renamed in 1930. In 1997 it was incorporated into Methoni, and in 2011 Finikounda merged with Methoni in the new municipality of Pylos-Nestor. In 2011 there were 592 inhabitants in the village itself. Since the beginning of the 21st century and with the completion of the Methoni- Koroni coastal road , Finikounda has developed into a tourist destination.
