The First Quarter Storm , also known as the First Quarter Storm Movement , is a left-wing political student movement that was limited to the capital of the Philippines, Manila and the Metro Manila region from January to March 1970 . Numerous student associations were involved in the movement, including the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP). The movement was influenced by the 1968 movement , but also by Marxism and Maoism . The main centers of the movement were the University of the Philippines Diliman and the University of the Philippines Manila, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of the East .

The demonstrations began on January 26, 1970 in front of the House of Representatives of the Philippines on the occasion of a speech by then President Ferdinand Marcos . The protests turned against governance, rising government corruption, population poverty and the alliance with the US during the Vietnam War . From January 30, 1970 there were the first violent clashes with the police, who tried to break up the initially peaceful demonstrations by force. As a result, fierce street battles developed . Several hundred students were arrested and four were killed on the night of January 30-31.

The demonstrations and student riots continued until March 1970, but flagged as several thousand students were detained, tortured and several dozen killed. Parts of the movement also became increasingly radicalized, with several hundred students going underground after the unrest and joining the Maoist Nuevo Ejército del Pueblo . Others went into politics or exile.
